My thoughts on Junior membership

Let me start by saying that I started a chip collection for my 4 Grandchildren when they were very young. Each one has a different collecting theme - Bear chips, Bull chips, Christmas chips and Halloween chips. I have their collections housed in Dansco albums and I keep the albums at my home. When they come over to visit, if they want to we look thru the chips - find them on the internet, etc. we have some good quality time looking at the chips and talking about them. I don't push them to collect, but let them go at their own pace. The youngest Grandson who is now 7 and who has the Halloween chip collection has shown the most interest in his chips. This year I asked him if he wanted chips for Christmas or some other type of present or toy. He said "Pop-pop I want more Halloween chips for my collection." I was thrilled and went out and bought him a bunch of $5 Halloween LEs. I have done all this myself on a one on one basis with my own Grandchildren not thru any organized effort by the CCGTCC and I believe this is the way it should be done.

I agree with Jim Kruse that there may be some negative reaction to our Club sponsoring chip collecting in a public forum for children under 18 or even 21 (legal age to gamble in most areas).

I have always thought that we should concentrate on recruiting "older" members and not focusing on kids. Unlike coin or stamp collecting - where kids can go into a bank or Post Office or coin shop and buy the items they want for their collections by themselves - kids can NOT go into Casinos and pick up chips or tokens, etc.

I agree with Jim Kruse that the Junior member idea has the potential to do more harm than good for our "adult" oriented hobby.
In summary if you want to get your kids or Grandkids started on chip collecting - do it on your own in a controled fashion and don't make it a public program sponsored by our Club.

Jerry
