When the club has no viable place left in town to go for our next convention, it will be too late to say, "gee, I should have paid more attention to the convention problem the club was experiencing in 2007-08".
For those who keep harping "move the convention outside of Las Vegas" ... in what major U.S. city are you going to get a hotel room rate for $89 outside of Las Vegas that has the convention facilities the club enjoys at The Riv? Yes, some folks may have received cheaper room rate offers from the Riv as a perk, and that's completely understandable, but it's like some folks in line having 2 for 1 buffet coupons or complimentary show tix or discount coffee shop meal coupons and others without having to pay the full rate. Not everyone is privileged.
Yes, everyone will agree the Riv is not the best hotel in town, but it certainly is far from the worst. Not everybody drives Lexus automobiles. Some enjoy driving Fords, Toyotas and Hondas. Like the old adage goes; "pay me now, or pay me later" certainly applies here. As Wayne has pointed out, right now the club pays nothing extra for the huge ballroom space for the dealer bourse or for the ample meeting rooms we now enjoy because the club has been barely meeting our hotel room obligation; which was also the case at the Trop and Orleans. If the club has to pay extra for this necessary convention space because of not meeting our hotel room commitment, then these additional costs in all probability will have to be raised to cover the significant additional expense. Will 100 dealers pay the needed increased table fees, or will only 50 of them ante up? Will club members pay the additional admission fees to the convention, or increased dues? Will the public attend at higher admission costs? Will the banquet costs need to be increased so dramatically that only one hundred will attend vs. the several hundreds that now attend? Or, is it possible that 2008 may be the final chapter of our wonderful Las Vegas CC & GTCC Convention experiences?
Think about it. It's YOUR show ...
